Monas Collective
MONAS ist ein Kollektiv um den Musiker und Klangkünstler Kurt Holzkämper und dem Wissenschaftler Prof. Dr. Hubert Wiggering. Wissenschaft, Klang-, Licht-, und Objektkunst lösen hierbei in performativen und installativen Formaten gegenseitige Impulse aus.
Der Name MONAS (altgriechisch: “Einheit”) ist als kleinstes Teil einer größeren Vielheit zu verstehen. Alles hängt mit allem zusammen (Humboldt).
Das Kollektiv arbeitet mit endosymbiotischen Prozessen aus Ursprünglichem und Artifiziellem im Grenzbereich unserer Sinneswahrnehmungen.
Durch speziell entwickelte Klimasensoren werden BesucherInnen und die Pflanzenwelt gemeinsam ins künstlerische Ergebnis einbezogen womit eine neue Perspektive auf unsere anthropozentrische Wahrnehmung der Natur als Gegenüber erlebbar wird.
MONAS is a collective around the musician and sound artist Kurt Holzkämper and the scientist Prof. Dr. Hubert Wiggering. Science, sound, light and object art trigger mutual impulses in performative and installation formats.
The name MONAS (ancient Greek: “unity”) is to be understood as the smallest part of a larger multitude. Everything is connected to everything (Humboldt).
The collective works with endosymbiotic processes of the original and the artificial in the border area of our sensory perceptions.
Using specially developed climate sensors, visitors and the plant world are included together in the artistic result, thus allowing a new perspective on our anthropocentric perception of nature as a counterpart to be experienced.
Warum Moore?
Why mires?
Moore sind natürlicherweise ein Speicher für Kohlenstoff. In organischem Material wird Kohlenstoff langfristig gebunden und nicht als treibhausrelevante Kohlenstoffverbindungen (Treibhausgase) in die Atmosphäre freigesetzt. Aber nur ein intaktes Moor erfüllt diese Speicherfunktion und ist daher ein entscheidender Klimafaktor. Kohlenstoff wird in großen Mengen durch Photosynthese der auf dem Moor wachsenden Pflanzen aufgenommen und dann im Torf fixiert. Ändert sich allerdings das Klima oder werden die Moore entwässert, dann ändern sich auch die Stoffkreisläufe der Moore, organisches Material kommt in Kontakt mit Sauerstoff und wird zersetzt. Damit werden Moore Quellen von treibhausrelevanten Kohlenstoffverbindungen wie Kohlendioxid und Methan. Dadurch werden die der Atmosphäre zunächst entnommenen Stoffe bei einer Erwärmung des Klimas und/oder bei einer Entwässerung der Moore wieder in die Atmosphäre zurückgegeben und das vergleichsweise schnell. Der Prozess der Rückwandlung von Moorlandschaften durch Wiedervernässung wird zum Synonym für einen lebensnotwendigen Paradigmenwechsel.
Mires are naturally a storage facility for carbon. Carbon is bound in organic material for the long term and is not released into the atmosphere as greenhouse-relevant carbon compounds (greenhouse gases). But only an intact peatland fulfils this storage function and is therefore a crucial climate factor. Carbon is absorbed in large quantities by photosynthesis of the plants growing on the peatland and then fixed in the peat. However, if the climate changes or the peatlands are drained, the material cycles of the peatlands also change, organic material comes into contact with oxygen and is decomposed. This makes peatlands sources of greenhouse-relevant carbon compounds such as carbon dioxide and methane. As a result, the substances initially taken from the atmosphere are returned to the atmosphere relatively quickly when the climate warms and/or the peatlands are drained. The process of reconverting peatland landscapes through rewetting is becoming synonymous with a vital paradigm shift.
Kurt Holzkämper
Kurt Holzkämper ist Bassist und Klangkünstler. Seit seinem Musikstudium am HZK in Würzburg erkundet er in seinen Arbeiten die darstellerischen Konvergenzen und Grenzen zu Kunstformen wie modern dance, Schauspiel, live-Illustration oder Klanginstallationen. Seine künstlerische Intention ist das abstrakte Zusammenspiel von Bewegung und Klang, Konzeption und Komposition durch Klangtexturen, Harmonien und Melodien. So ist er als Musiker und Komponist mit zahlreichen internationalen und interdisziplinären Projekten aktiv, wie z.B. mit dem österreichischen Stepptänzer Thomas Marek, dem iranischen Zeichner Mehrdad Zaeri, dem stuttgarter Staatsballett, der Neuen Musik und mit der Schauspielerin Suzanne von Borsody bei Bühnenprogrammen über Frida Kahlo und Heinrich Heine uvm.
Kurt Holzkämper is a bassist and sound artist. Since studying music at the HZK in Würzburg, his work has explored the convergences and boundaries of art forms such as modern dance, acting, live illustration and sound installations. His artistic intention is the abstract interplay of movement and sound, conception and composition through sound textures, harmonies and melodies. As a musician and composer, he is active in numerous international and interdisciplinary projects, for example with the Austrian tap dancer Thomas Marek, the Iranian illustrator Mehrdad Zaeri, the Stuttgart State Ballet, New Music and with the actress Suzanne von Borsody in stage programs about Frida Kahlo and Heinrich Heine and many more.
Prof. Dr. Hubert Wiggering
Geboren 1956 in Freren/Emsland. Dem Studium der Geologie an der Universität Münster folgte eine Ausrichtung auf die Umweltwissenschaften mit der Promotion an der Universität GH Essen und Habilitation an der Gutenberg Universität Mainz sowie längeren Forschungsaufenthalten an der California State University in Long Beach, am australischen Geological Survey in Perth und an der Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesburg, an der Harvard University in Boston und der University of Hawaii in Honolulu. Von 1994 bis 2001 war er Generalsekretärs des Sachverständigenrats für Umweltfragen (SRU), ab 2001 dann Professor für Geoökologie an der Universität Potsdam und bis 2014 gleichzeitig wissenschaftlicher Direktor des Leibniz-Zentrums für Agrarlandschaftsforschung (ZALF) in Müncheberg. Er war Mitglied diverser wissenschaftlicher wie politischer Beratungsgremien. Zusätzlich zu den Fragen der
Nachhaltigkeit, der Entwicklung von Landschaften und deren Nutzung richtet er ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die Entwicklung neuartiger Forschungsstrukturen und auf neue Wege des Wissenstransfers. Letzteres begründet u.a. seine Aktivitäten im Künstlerkolletiv MONAS.
Born in 1956 in Freren/Emsland. After studying geology at the University of Münster, he focused on environmental sciences, earning a doctorate at the University of Essen and a habilitation at the Gutenberg University Mainz, as well as longer research stays at the California State University in Long Beach, the Australian Geological Survey in Perth and the Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesburg, Harvard University in Boston and the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. From 1994 to 2001 he was Secretary General of the German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU), from 2001 he was Professor of Geoecology at the University of Potsdam and until 2014 he was also Scientific Director of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) in Müncheberg. He was a member of various scientific and political advisory bodies.
In addition to the issues of sustainability, the development of landscapes and their use, he pays particular attention to the development of new research structures and new ways of transferring knowledge. The latter is, among other things, the reason for his activities in the artist collective MONAS.

Der Lichtkünstler Laurenz Theinert konzentriert sein Schaffen auf visuelle Erfahrungen, die nicht mehr bildhaft auf etwas verweisen. Er strebt vielmehr nach einer abstrakt-reduzierten Ästhetik, die ihn – durch den Wunsch nach weiterer Entmaterialisierung – von der Fotografie schließlich zum Medium Licht führte.
Er ist Live-Licht- und Medienkünstler. Seine „visual piano“ Performances werden auf der ganzen Welt gezeigt. Von Sao Paulo, London, Sydney, Berlin über New York bis Singapur. Um mit den beteiligten Künstlern live, abstrakt und raumfüllend einen spontanen, aktiven Dialog zu ermöglichen, erfand er dafür das weltweit einzigartige Instrument »visual piano«, das es ihm ermöglicht Räume mit Linien, Objekten und Farben in Echtzeit zu füllen ohne die Verwendung vorgefertigter Clips.
The light artist Laurenz Theinert focuses his work on visual experiences that no longer refer to something pictorially. Rather, he strives for an abstract, reduced aesthetic that - through the desire for further dematerialization - ultimately led him from photography to the medium of light.
He is a live light and media artist. His "visual piano" performances are shown all over the world. From Sao Paulo, London, Sydney, Berlin, New York to Singapore. In order to enable a spontaneous, active dialogue with the participating artists live, abstractly and in a room-filling manner, he invented the world's only instrument "visual piano", which enables him to fill rooms with lines, objects and colors in real time without using pre-made clips.

Geb. 1986 in Friedberg. Frühe Arbeit und Ausbildung in Musik und bildender Kunst, Film und Bildhauerei. Studium Jazzgitarre an der HfM Würzburg. Lebt seit 2013 als freischaffender Künstler, Musiker und Komponist in Berlin. EU-weite Tourneetätigkeit mit der Band HOPE, Solo und Soundwork.
Phillip Staffa kombiniert Klang, Skulptur, bildende Kunst und kinetische Objekte.
Im Fokus stehen sich allmählich verändernde Prozesse, zeitbasierte Anwendungen und Meditationen und die Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Umwelt. Als Musiker und Bildhauer erschafft er Werke aus Rohmaterialien und gefundenen Objekten, wobei eine Vielzahl von Techniken, Medien und Aspekten der Akustik verwendet wird, um Kunstwerke an der Grenze zu Skulpturen und Audioinstallationen zu schaffen.
Born in 1986 in Friedberg. Early work and training in music and visual arts, film and sculpture. Studies of jazz guitar at HfM Würzburg, living in Berlin since 2013 as a freelance artist, musician and composer. Tours throughout the EU with the band HOPE, Solo and Sound Work.
With a focus on gradually changing processes, time-based applications and meditations and the relationship between humans and the environment Phillip Staffa combines sound, sculpture, visual art and kinetic objects. As a musician and sculptor, he creates works from raw materials and found objects, using a variety of techniques, media and aspects of acoustics to create artworks on the border of sculpture and audio installation.

Studium der B.A. Kultur- und Medienbildung mit Schwerpunkt Musik & Kunst an der PH Ludwigsburg/ SWU Blagoevgrad. Arbeit als Projekt-& Regieassistentin bei interkulturellen Musik- und Theaterprojekten im süddeutschen Raum. Unterstützte Monas Collective bereits bei mehreren Projekten im Bereich Finanzmanagement, Projektleitung, Stiftungsrecherche sowie Organisation. Aktuell wohnhaft in Hannover und hauptberuflich als Atem-, Sprech-, und Stimmlehrerin tätig.
Studied B.A. in Cultural and Media Education with a focus on Music & Art at PH Ludwigsburg / SWU Blagoevgrad. Worked as a project and directing assistant on intercultural music and theater projects in the southern German region. Has already supported Monas Collective in several projects in the areas of financial management, project leadership, foundation research, and organization. Currently living in Hannover and working professionally as a breathing, speech, and voice teacher.
